While working on a “food” program for my Just Dorothy film presentations, I thought it good to once again feast my eyes (pun intended) on the 1987 drama, Babette’s Feast. (My copy is with subtitles.) Babette is the first Danish film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

imagesBabette, a French refugee has a letter of introduction requesting she live with the elderly sisters. Though reluctant, the sisters let her stay, albeit with her Catholic faith and agreeing to take no pay to serve them.

Fourteen years pass. The sisters tell Babette they are planning a dinner to celebrate their late father’s 100th birthday, a simple dinner of course. Babette offers to prepare and serve the dinner as long as she has full responsibility. images-2Oh, my gosh! What happens next is enough to make one join the group just to sit at the table. And, their reactions? No spoilers here. Don’t miss this delightful film with more than plenty of food (yes, pun intended) for thought!
